August 2004
One thing about the music biz you can count on, things always change. My big change is that I left Nick Curran & The Nitelifes after a year of touring, culminating in the CD “Player!” which is out now (you can hear my sax on a bunch of the cuts).
In July I began touring with Janiva Magness, a great and stalwart blues singer out of L.A. You can see the band’s calendar at www.janivamagness.com, and also on my website.
When I’m not touring with JM, I’m playing with the usual assortment of creative geniuses and oddballs here in Austin. Mark Hays, my former bandmate with the Seth Walker Band, hosts a great blues invitational at TC’s Bar on Webberville rd. in East Austin, every Tues. from 9pm to midnight. Mark is still one of the best blues drummers in Texas, in my opinion.
My old friends in Groovin Ground have been hosting a weekly Wednesday jam called “The Portal”, where musically anything goes (and I go with it!). It’s held at Ruta Maya Coffeehouse on South Congress, just north of Ben White Blvd. The Portal opens it ears around 9:30pm and wends through space & time until about 1am.
Groovin Ground is also celebrating the release of its wacked-out CD “Dome” with shows in Aug. & Sept. I’ll be playing with GG as much as I can then.
Other Austin CD projects: I played on Kelly Doze’s new release, as well as Malford Milligan’s new CD. Check ‘em out! Also, my old friend James Hinkle is coming out with more of his Ft. Worth-based blues. I got to lay a few tracks down with him earlier this summer; keep an ear out for his latest release soon.
My own CD projects are proceeding apace. The birthing process is always painful (Zeus had quite a headache that one time…), and often lengthy. But my latest musical offspring should be out soon.
I guess the summer is winding down. It seems like it just started. See you on the big hamster wheel of destiny
