Mardi Gras, Valentine’s Day, Black History Month… February has a variety of musical themes for me. We had a fun Mardi Gras party on Feb 3 at the Skylark Lounge. Dave Webb, Brad Taylor, Wayne Duncan, and Mike Roeder joined me for some New Orleans funk and second line jams.
Mardi Gras night is Feb 9, which coincides with my Roots of Jazz Jam at Kickbutt Coffee, so we’ll dip back into some older New Orleans jazz for the occasion.
Feb 10 we’ll feature love songs at the Skylark, to get in the mood for V-Day. I’ll have Masumi Jones on drums, bringing her romantic back beat to woo jazz lovers.
Jazz Wednesdays at the Skylark have been going well, and I’ll continue to feature a different theme each week. Feb 17 is Manteca Beat (we always play the 3rd Wednesday of the month), featuring the wonderful voice of Cicely Jones. Feb 24 will feature Afrocentric jazz to recognize Black History Month. If you want to know more about the African aesthetic in jazz, just come on down. We will educate you, but it won’t hurt a bit.
This month I’m also going in the recording studio to track some original songs. Stay tuned for some sneak previews of those!
