After 5 months sheltering at home, I took a couple weeks to get my head straight, driving up to Colorado and camping along the way. It seemed like a good way to get out in the world with minimal risk of infection. I highly recommend it!
First stop was good ol’ Lubbock, TX, where I caught up with my old bandmate Steve Williams, a great guitarist. I camped outside Abiquiu, NM for a few nights, then on to Pagosa Springs, CO. My main goal was staying with friends in Ridgway, Co, a lovely little town with views of the San Juan and Cimmaron mountain ranges.
After that I headed to the Gunnison area, camping outside Paonia, and hiking in Grand Mesa National Forest and Gunnison Black Canyon. Beautiful.
The miles and miles of hairpin turns through the mountain roads in my little rental car did give me vertigo after awhile, and I was happy to get back down to the flatlands. I spent two more nights outside Santa Fe, then Mae the looooong drive back through West Texas to Austin.
Now my mental battery is at least partially recharged. I’ll be producing a series of outdoor shows through the fall. That seems the safest way to offer live music these days. Check the calendar at pksax.com for details.
